Sports sunglasses aim to ease miners' transition

I think that what the Oakley company is doing is really kind to the thirty-three miners that stayed for sixty-nine days underground without much space to move, and not much light coming inside the hole that was more than two-thousands feet deep. These miners were really exposed to light damage to the retina due to solar retinopathy, which may deteriorate the photoreceptors that are in change of capturing the light within the eye. The problem was that because the long exposure to darkness, the eye's mechanism to protect itself from the light can be reduced to a point in which the retina can be seriously damaged by sunlight, and cause blindness. Besides the glasses that the miners received, they also got donation from other companyes that generously donated other stuffs like high-calorie liquid meals, coming from the nasa; iPods donated by Apple, and much others.

Yogurt co. turns to plants for packaging

I think that Stonyfield has made a great decision by changing its old plastic yogurt containers. Some health agencies were complaining about the possible carcinogens that these plastic cups may contain, so this company decided to make a smart move and change, Beyond the complaining of agencies that are looking for money, these new containers are good for people, and environmental friendly so this have a positive impact in the environmental part. Even though this new polymer has many advantages, it has disadvantages too like it is not recyclable, the company wants to make it from corn that has not been genetically modified so they have to pay farmers that would do it for them, and keeping the two products separate would have been too expensive.

FDA cracks down on chelation therapy drugs

The benefits from Chelation therapy hasn't gone under supervised experimentation, so I think that these companies ( World Health Products; Hormonal Health; Evenbetternow; Maxam Nutraceutics/Maxam Laboratories; Cardio Renew; Artery Health Institute; among others) should not sell this products freely to the public, but be able to sell it with a precise prescription of a doctor. Even though that it has good impacts on the circulatory system because the use of Chelation reduce inflammation of the veins, lower cholesterol levels, and remove calcium in fatty plaques; and may be a treatment for autism, it is still illegal since the FDA hasn't approved it yet as a safe treatment.

Post-menopausal hormones boost breast cancer risk, study finds

The hormonal treatment for women with menopause should be restudied, and even recreated to another one that would not have the effect that this one is having among the women who use it. I think that women should stop using this treatment and change to the placebo, because it's been proved that the placebo treatment has less percentage on developing breast cancer, and death from it. Even with all the information about the side-effects of the hormonal treatment, some doctors say that people should not abandon this way to alleviate the problem and that all the treatments bring the same problems, the problem is that this particular treatment has the highest percentages of women dying from breast cancer and the other diseases that the hormonal treatment may cause.

Winter's limited light darkens many moods

Monday, November 15, 2010; 3:08 PM When the seasons change and the days start getting shorter in order the hours of light that is has, this may affect some people that may start feeling sleepy, and without as much energy as they used to have. People who live in places where there is not much daylight may suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disease) which takes away their energy and make them more likely to be depressed. Some methods that can be used to reduce these effect are the use of light therapy, which would give the body enough light so it will stop producing melatonin that is a hormone which prepares the body to enter a rest state (which causes the sleepy feeling), also the other treatment is that if this doesn't work, you still can go to your physician. It's normal to feel with less energy in shorter or darker days.

As AIDS epidemic ebbs, many challenges remain
By David Brown

Tuesday, November 23, 2010; 11:41 PM The number of people who are infected with AIDS and dying from it is going down, there are more people with AIDS, but the rate of people dying from and getting it is lower than in past years, the development of new drugs that will fight against the disease has a big impact in these statistics, but the true is that still a lot of people cannot get treatment because they cannot afford it. Some organizations offer their services, but most of the time they can not keep giving these treatments for free due to their cost. Another statistic that has improved is the number of babies that used to get the disease from their mother, with the new medicine that has been produced the babies will not receive the disease, but the problem is that the mothers don't take the treatment for themselves which makes a bigger problem.
